High School students from a summer writing camp, Words With Wings (organized by the Missoula Writing Collaborative) visited the Wood Engravers’ Network Triennial Exhibition and Dramatic Movements: Frederic Remington’s Early Engravings, 1882–1893 at the Montana Museum of Art & Culture in July and wrote Ekphrastic poems inspired by their favorite works. This is the last week to catch the exhibit in Montana, closing September 17, 2016. We’ll be sharing the poems along with images of the engraving “muses” each week. Here is the forth of ten:
Poem title & Author: While I Fish, Allie Berger
Art title & Artist: Ton of Tarpon, Dave Bruner
As I fish
off the back of the boat,
I see a huge fin.
It’s so big
it looks like it can touch the sky.
I try to peer into the dark,
murky water.
Then I feel a tug
as strong as a grizzly bear
on my line
as the boat tips back, as the creature
pulls me overboard–
I let go
and swim to the surface of the water.
