Join Rebecca Gilbert and assistant Chad Pastotnik (Deep Wood Press) for a Wood Engraving workshop at the Louis Jou Foundation typography and printing studio, in Les Baux de Provence, France October 2-4.
Learn the art of wood engraving or just come to engrave and study in the 16th century Hotel Jean de Brion. Louis Jou Foundation is in the beautiful rural countryside of Les Baux-de-Provence on a spur of rock, just south of Avignon.
After a short introduction to wood engraving, you will learn to cut your own original drawings into end-grain hardwood blocks, proof blocks on the iron handpresses and print a collaborative keepsake. Instruction will cover materials, creating and transferring images, tool sharpening, engraving, printing and proofing on the iron hand presses. No previous experience is necessary, but it is helpful to have some previous drawing experience for these miniature prints.
Students are encouraged to stay in the beautiful Hotel Jean de Brion, right next to Louis Jou’s atelier – accommodations are included with course cost.
The course will be taught in English, with both English and French notes provided on paper. English and French speakers are welcome!
