Terrible puns aside, Sarah Brown of Questionable Press has created an awe-inspiring installation of sculptural paper fish! The exhibition, “Questionable Press Presents 1,529 Paper Fish,” will be on display at Arts West (132 West State Street, Athens, OH) through April 25, 2019.
Sarah Brown is a wood engraving and letterpress artist in Lancaster, Ohio. She uses three tons of vintage letterpress printing equipment to make well-made whim-wham for her business, Questionable Press. Her main press is a 1958 Heidelberg Windmill, designed to print long runs of small prints. Wood engraving was once a prominent image making process. Though it is now most often used for limited edition prints, the blocks are designed to hold fine detail through the test of time and pressure. Sarah creates work that concentrates on engaging others in play, communication, and the natural world while working within the confines of traditional letterpress printing. The main component of this piece, the paper fish sculpture, is part of her paper sculpture series, sold individually as a kit.
Congratulations, Sarah – what a great installation, print concept, and what fun!
