Thursday, June 19th, Juneteenth holiday:

• National museums open. We will gather in the morning as a group and travel downtown. Everyone will have free choice to visit sights and museums for the day. Gather at 5.30pm to travel back to Hyattsville for dinner. https://www.si.edu/visit/museums

Friday, June 20th:

• 10am-5:30pm. Engraving at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center
• View prints from the Current WEN Triennial exhibitions
• 5:30 – 7pm: Free open house and reception at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center

Saturday, June 20th-21st:

• Presentation from our guest artist Abigail Rorer and visit with friends old and new.

About our guest speakers:

Abigail Rorer was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania in 1949. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design concentrating on etching and lithography. After graduation she taught art for a few years until leaving to concentrate on pen and ink book illustrations and etchings. She had a desire to learn wood engraving and was fortunate to have met the wood engraver Barry Moser through a mutual gallery. He very graciously explained how one wood engraves and the tools needed to make a print.

In 1989 Abigail established The Lone Oak Press. The press publishes limited edition, letterpress printed books and broadsides illustrated with her relief engravings and etchings. All of the images are printed by Abigail from the original blocks and plates with many of the images being multi-block color engravings incorporating reduction printing and frequently having some hand coloring. http://theloneoakpress.com/

If arriving by air, your best options are Reagan, Baltimore and Dulles airports. You can take the metro from the airport to downtown DC, and switch to the Orange line, and ride north-east to Landover station, and take a taxi or Uber from there to the Holiday Inn, which is a 2.5 mile/7 minute drive from the station. Ticket prices for metro will not exceed $6 and train from BWI is $8 one way.

Metro to DC Tuesday-Thursday:

We will be taking the Orange line from Landover to L’Enfant Plaza. Cost of trip is $4.60 one way. Metro tickets are not covered by conference fee. Seniors ride for half off. Safety: Many people commute to work and schools around the DC area using the metro and public transportation. The metro stations are safe and well lit. We will have a few cars in the morning to help ferry people over to the metro station and to Pyramid Atlantic from the hotel.

Food:

Everyone is responsible for their own meals. The hotel offers free breakfast, and on workshop days WEN will have a coffee maker and a water kettle for tea and coffee for participants. There is a nice cafe right across the street from Pyramid Atlantic, and a few african restaurants, a sandwich shop and a convenience store within a block walking distance.
