Time to Register for WEN-CON UK 2020!
Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse yourself in wood engraving and celebrate the Society of Wood Engravers’ 100th Anniversary! WEN and non-WEN members are welcome to join us, visiting museums, English wood engraving artists, historic places and gardens, and be part of special events in collaboration with the Society of Wood Engravers, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, Peter Lawrence, Hilary Paynter, Anne Desmet, and many more.
Our group will meet at London Heathrow Airport on Friday May 29 for 10 days of total wood engraving immersion, departing from Heathrow on Monday June 8.
Due to Covid-19, WEN is Rescheduling our journey to England until June 2021 — look for price and schedule revisions before December 2020.
Here is our itinerary:
FRI. May 29: meet at London Heathrow airport.
SAT. May 30: Oxford: “Study Day” event at the Ashmolean Museum (Speakers: Anne Desmet, Colin Harrison – Senior Curator, Simon Lawrence of the Fleece Press), 10:30am–4pm (£50 fee for registration). Scene Through Wood: A Century of Modern Wood Engraving exhibit at Ashmolean. Dinner at Hotel restaurant.
SUN. May 31: Oxford: Visit new Weston Library (the new Bodleian) on Broad St. to see an exhibit of books with wood engravings. Then, head to Oxford University Museum of Natural History or the Ashmolean Museum.
Lunch at King’s Arms 12:45–2:30pm (Peter Lawrence has reserved a room for us to dine with SWE friends — individuals pay)
3PM The Bibliographical Press at the old Library, Bodleian Quad (collaborative keepsake activity) arranged by Peter Lawrence in collaboration with SWE.
Hotel: Doubletree by Hilton Chelsea, London — dinner in London on your own.
MON. June 1: 10am–3pm (times to be confirmed) Confirmed special activity/event at V&A Print Study Room with curator/ scholar Bethan Stevens. “Making an impression” exhibit at V&A.
Hotel: Doubletree by Hilton Chelsea, London — dinner in London on your own.
TUES. June 2: Morning visit to Anne Desmet’s home/studio in London.
Afternoon: Sir John Soane’s Museum and London Centre for Book Arts
Hotel: Doubletree by Hilton Chelsea, London — dinner in London on your own.
WED. June 3: 10am to 12:30pm at British Museum Print Study Room with a focus on the Brothers Dalziel archive of 54,000 wood engravings. There will be 2 groups (only 10 people are permitted at one time): one at 10:30am and one at 11:30am. Help me select prints/objects you wish to see — please contact Joanne with your suggestions.
Half-day excursion Hever Castle & Gardens.
Hotel: Doubletree by Hilton Chelsea, London — dinner on your own.
THURS. June 4: Visit Montacue House on the way to Hilary Paynter’s house in Bideford, Devon. Time at Hilary Paynter’s house will be open: engrave, draw, look at Hilary’s art collection, socialize, etc.

FRI. June 5: Visit to Clovelly, Bideford
Hotel: Orange Hill Hotel, Bideford
SAT. June 6: Bideford
Hotel: Orange Hill Hotel, Bideford
SUN. June 7: Bideford (check out about 1pm — 4 hour drive to hotel/London)
Visit Salisbury Cathedral and Windsor tour.

MON. June 8: One trip to London Heathrow in the morning for return flights.
Tour includes:
– transport by luxury motor coach with: driver & tour director
– meet and greet service with one group transfer arrival and departure at airport
– hotel accommodation based on twin bedded rooms with private bath for 10 nights
– 10 full breakfasts
– 3 dinners
– Hotel portage for one bag per person, service charges & government taxes

IMPORTANT DUE DATES AND COSTS
BEFORE FEBRUARY 16, 2020: $295 ($250 deposit + Ashmolean Museum/ SWE Conference registration fee of $45) plus optional Travel Protection Plan ($239 – if you decide to buy it = $534 total)

MARCH 1, 2020: Total remaining cost due on March 22 will be determined on March 1 by how many participants are registered. If there are:
10–14 people registered, then our final total per person will be $3,675 for a shared room or $4,944 for a single room.
15–20 people registered, then our final total per person will be $3,115 for a shared room or $4,384 for a single room.
BEFORE MARCH 22, 2020: the full remaining amount must be paid.
MAY 1, 2020: $130
– $130 Combined TIP for tour director and driver: $130 from each participant (10 days: $5 per person, per day for driver and $8 per person, per day for tour director) — you can include this fee with your lump sum or wait and personally give cash on the last day (remember to have GBP currency for tip.)
CANCELATION PENALTIES: All cancellations must be advised in writing. No refunds will be made for unused or pre-purchased events.
Between 99 and 65 days (Feb 19–March 24) Group deposit plus $250 per person
Between 64 and 21 days (March 25–May 8) 25% per person (CIE refunds 75% of total cost).
Between 20 and 08 days (May 9–21) 35% per person. (CIE refunds 65% of total cost)
Between 07 and 01 day (May 22–May 28) 50% per person. (CIE refunds 50% of total cost)
On day of departure 100% per person (CIE issues no refund)
ARRIVAL: You will want to arrive at LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT before 2pm London time on Friday May 29. Joanne will request your flight information in May 2020 so I or our tour guide can meet you.
DEPARTURE: One bus trip to LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT in the morning for flights on Monday June 8.
ADDITIONAL EXPENSES:
– Combined TIP for tour director and driver: $130 from each participant (10 days: $5 per person, per day for driver and $8 per person, per day for tour director) — included in deposit due before February 16.
– Entry fee to Ashmolean Museum event is £50 per person — If each participant can include $45 with payment, WEN will pay the rest of the fees for this.
– All meals not mentioned above will be the responsibility of each individual.
– Airfare and coordination for coach departure/ arrival times at London Heathrow Intl Airport is the responsibility of each individual.
I am sorry, we cannot accommodate partial journey registration, or discounts for spouses/family members (infants under 2 years are free). An individual traveler is welcome to meet us at one or more of the arranged activities — contact Joanne Price to inquire about arrangements/ reservations.
